There are several stages to the progression of herpes, both oral and genital. Understanding the recurring cycle of this disease can be beneficial both to lifestyle choices and treatment options. The first stage is sometimes known as the tingle stage, and lasts one or two days. A sense of soreness or tingling may be felt, even before any visible lesion or blister is seen. This may be more noticeable with repeated outbreaks, as more familiarity with the disease’s cycle is gained.
In first outbreaks of genital herpes, this tingling is sometimes accompanied by fever, headache, or feelings of low energy or mild illness.

Around day two or three, redness begins to form and small bumps appear. This stage, the first appearance of small blisters, is extremely contagious.
